Baptism

Baptism marks our entry into the Christian church; it is always administered with water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. From its earliest days the Church has believed that this sacrament was commanded by Jesus Christ as the means of initiation into the Christian community.

During the baptism of children both parents and Godparents are required to make firm commitments to bring up the baptised child within the life of the church, and also to affirm their own Christian faith. It is because of this that it is normally expected that Godparents should themselves be baptised and confirmed. The promises made at baptism imply intent to regularly bring the child to church in order that they should grow up as part of the community they have joined.

Because baptism is the means by which people are admitted as members of the Christian church we encourage those bringing children for baptism to attend the 10.00am worship on at least one Sunday morning in the weeks running up to their child’s baptism. The Family service on the first Sunday of each month is probably the best occasion for this, although all our worship is family friendly.

Most baptisms at St George’s church take place on a Saturday either at 11.00am or 3.00pm But we do try to accommodate requests for baptisms at the main act of worship on a Sunday. All baptisms are public acts of worship and commitment and as such there is no such thing as ‘private baptism’, and it is likely there will be another family having a child baptised at the same time as yours.

Because of the importance of the place of baptism within the life of the church we ask that the parents of children to be baptised attend a baptism preparation session, at which we will explore further what it means to be baptised.

Thanksgiving for the gift of a child:

This service provides an opportunity for those who are not ready to make the solemn commitments of baptism to celebrate the gift of a child in a public way. Its main themes are thanksgiving to God for the gift of children, assurance of God’s love for all, and our need of God’s blessing and help in the bringing up of our children and the nurturing of family life.

A baby who has been part of a service of thanksgiving may be brought to baptism on another occasion either as a child or when they are old enough to profess the Christian faith for themselves.

Procedure:   Baptism Notes.

Which ever type of service you opt for the procedure is the same: Contact the parish office Contact Us

You will be sent information and an enquiry form which you should then return to the office. Fr David will then contact you and arrange a date for your service and the date of a preparation session.

Cost:

There are no fees associated with either service but we do ask for a donation towards our administrative costs, and make a charge towards these costs for families who live outside the parish.

We have no obligation to baptise those who live outside the parish, but we are prepared to make exceptions for those families with genuine connections with Brockworth, the decision to baptise the child of a family who live outside the parish is at the discretion of the parish priest.
